The Nelengu

The Nelengu is a South Indian Custom which is a ceremony performed before the wedding. A paste of turmeric is applied all over the body of the groom. This is a cleansing ritual, and is known to ward off any bad astrological influences that may haunt the couple in the future.

This is not done by all sects, but it is common practise to perform the rites before a wedding. The Nelengu is performed by married women.

Guests are also treated to delicious meals prepared by the groom's parents, and it has become common practise to hold a disco or bhangra as an after party

Navz day-before started off with a 'Morning Nelegu' which is the messier version of the cleansing ritual, followed by the evening, 'calmer' Nelengu, some entertaining dances performed by his sister, Peroshnee and two of his cousins, and lots of fun and dancing.

At 6:30PM, 7 young girls, carrying gifts for the bride, go over to The Hurdhee Ceremony and hand them over, and in return collect 7 gifts for Navz.
